Sustainable design isn’t a new trend for the contract interiors industry, but it’s one that continues to gain momentum. Clients are more often asking for sustainable design solutions and looking to support environmentally sustainable and socially responsible causes. Every choice in the design process can make a difference.
In our monthly design news aggregate, we’re featuring three programs that offer designers the chance to positively impact the global community. Do you have a favorite program or product that we didn’t include? Tell us about it in the comments.
Interface Net-WorksTM
In the Philippines and Cameroon, the Net-Works program organizes locals to collect discarded fishing nets from beaches and the sea. They sell the nets into a global supply chain, and the nets are regenerated into nylon yard that is used for Interface’s flooring. The program benefits both the environment, since the nets can wreak havoc on the marine ecosystems, and the local individuals who are able to make additional income for collecting nets that were once disregarded as trash.
Net-Works is all about positive social, business and environmental results. Learn more about Net-Works.
ARZU STUDIO HOPE
Coalesse has partnered with ARZU STUDIO HOPE to curate the Modern Collection, handmade, artisan-crafted rugs from Afghanistan. ARZU is dedicated to creating high-quality rugs while minimizing environmental impact and maximizing fair labor practices. The organization employs approximately 500 individuals, most of whom are women, and also supports healthcare and education for its employees and their families.
ARZU rugs are not only a beautiful example of craft, but they’re part of a program that is striving to break the poverty cycle in Afghanistan, too. Learn more about ARZU STUDIO HOPE.
MASS Design Group
Design has the ability to impact health, well-being and communities, according to architecture firm MASS Design Group. They believe that architecture can improve lives, and their projects are stunning examples of the power of design to effect change in communities.
The Gheskio Cholera Treatment Center in Haiti is one prime example of their work. The facility design is a vast improvement over the temporary treatment facilities previously being used and incorporates an on-site waste water treatment facility to prevent recontamination.
This is one of many projects by MASS Design Group that has had a tremendous impact on global communities. Learn more about MASS Design Group.
