NeoCon, the premier event for the contract furniture industry, is always full of surprises. This year, it was a Carl Hansen & Son CH445 Wing Chair that earned the title “showstopper.” The iconic chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960, was part of a unique collaboration between Coalesse, Designtex, and artist Phillip Low.

The multi-party collaboration began with an invitation from Coalesse and Carl Hansen & Son to Designtex to create textiles for a classic piece from the Carl Hansen furniture line. Leveraging its surface imaging capabilities, Designtex decided to develop a custom pattern that could be used as both a wallcovering and an upholstery.

After an extensive search, Phillip Low was selected for the project. Low, a Vancouver-born artist now based in New York, creates one-of-kind sculptures crafted from sheets of colored acrylic that are laminated together to form large blocks. These are then milled into geometric shapes, and the surfaces are either polished or left rough and matte, thereby shaping the way that light passes through the translucent forms. Low’s sculptures were photographed in a range of lighting conditions, and these images were manipulated to generate Prismatic, a pattern full of saturated color and subtle interplays reflections and refractions.

The work was printed by Designtex at their surface imagining studio in Portland and shipped to Denmark where Carl Hansen & Son upholsterers applied their well-honed craft to wrap the images around the contours of the chair. The end result is a source of pride for multiple artists and craftsmen, and an installation that both stuns and pleases the senses.
