Congratulations to Samantha Gotta for her design “Cattle Tail” which is the grand prize winner of Coalesse’s Carl Hansen & Son Blank Canvas Contest. Samantha wins a trip to Denmark to visit Carl Hansen & Son as well as a CH468 Oculus chair upholstered in her fabric, printed by Designtex. We asked Samantha a few questions about herself and her design.
1. Where do you live?
Fulton Market, Chicago, Illinois
2. Where do you work and what is your role?
I work at Archideas as an Interior Designer.
3. How did you hear about the contest?
Sandy Rempe, my Coalesse A&D Consultant, brought flyers into the office.
4. What prompted you to enter?
I like to enter contests because you are your own client. It’s a good way to push your artistic boundaries since the only parameters are in the rules of the competition, not the design.
5. How familiar are you with Carl Hansen & Son and Hans Wegner?
I first saw the Wishbone chair in 2003, and it was love at first sight. The craftsmanship in its design is something that can’t be matched.
6. What inspired you? Where did you find inspiration for your design?
In my home, my furniture is a mix of floral sofas, industrial metal stools, horse hair ottomans, and cow hide pillows. I love mixing different materials for an unexpected combination. Textile companies have been making faux fur for a long time, but I have never seen a fabric textile that mimics fur. Wouldn’t it be cool to have the same hand and appearance as a fur, but be made of fabric?
7. What was your design process?
I wanted to accentuate the large oval frame of the chair and its sleek profile. I knew that a large scale pattern would work best to not compete with the scale of the chair. The design happened fluidly because I envisioned the geometric pattern on an oval intuitively.
8. Where do you intend to put your winning chair? Will your pets be allowed on it?
My dog, Lady, owns my apartment. I just pay rent.
9. What are you most looking forward to about the trip?
I’m looking forward to learning more about the furniture manufacturing process.
10. How do you think this will influence your future design work?
I think we become better designers with real world experience. Travel gives us fresh perspective to ideas.
