Driven by Design is a video series hosted by Coalesse Global Design Director John Hamilton that explores what drives the international design community. Each episode follows Hamilton as he talks with innovators from around the world about creativity, inspiration and their work, all while driving around town.
Episode 3 finds Hamilton back behind the wheel with designer Mathias Hahn. The two discuss creative exchange, design education and the evolution of the design process culturally and individually. First taught to paint by his grandmother, Hahn’s unique approach to process and material forms the basis for his collaborations.
Hahn has previously designed for Coalesse partner nanimarquina.
The German-born designer lives and works in London, where he established Mathias Hahn Design Studio in 2006. Hahn’s studio covers a diversity of projects ranging from industrial design, product development and art-direction to experimental design, one-off production, interiors and exhibitions. Hahn has applied his characteristic curiosity for materials and his humanistic approach to projects for Ligne Roset, Marset, Zeitraum, Ikea, Kohler, Asplund, Kvadrat, Merck, Wallpaper*, V&A, and Design Museum, among others.
His work is represented in permanent museum collections and has received numerous international awards including the Wallpaper* Design Award 2017, red dot: Best of the Best, an IF Award and an Interior Innovation Award. In 2014, Elle Decoration Germany selected Mathias Hahn as Newcomer of the year, and in 2010 he received the 2010 German Design Award as Newcomer/Finalist. He is a regular guest lecturer, jury member and guest editor, most recently teaching at the Universität der Künste Berlin.
