Coalesse believes that color, pattern and material are the most emotive design categories and have the power to bring a warm, inviting sensibility to the workplace. We have expanded our customization capabilities to invite designers to personalize our products in these highly visible ways through:
As Coalesse developed these capabilities, the Coalesse Design Group began to form a clear point of view on the types of patterns and colors that it wanted to see applied. Their desire was to develop these elements to work with Coalesse furniture – but also respond to wellbeing and the drive towards a more human-centered workplace experience.
The answer was to look outside, to nature. The principle of biophilia states that human beings are innately drawn to nature for their wellbeing. That insight was the starting point for developing pattern form language and color palettes that would convey a sense of the natural world. And in so doing, the products they are applied to intuitively promote the comfort, rejuvenation and stress reduction that are crucial to people’s positive connection to their workplaces.
“We had been researching and then creating exploratory patterns and natural color ranges that were part of our vernacular. The thing we were intrigued by is how to create more symbolic or subtle cues from nature because we know that the brain is wired to automatically recognize those patterns and fill them in. Our patterns and referential colors tap into that sensibility with the variety, interest and stimulation that we benefit from as human beings—but without being limited by a more literal translation.” – John Hamilton
The resulting pattern and color explorations are thus not direct portrayals of landscape, flora or fauna. These are abstractions that are created through a meticulous design process of iteration and reduction. The team began with beautiful reference images of water, wood, sand, a flock of birds or dappled light, for example. Those images were then manipulated multiple times to reach these simplified, pure, repeatable motifs. Although they are abstractions, they still feel as if they have the spirit of nature in them.
The final nine patterns are a translation of the vitality of nature into the modern beauty of nine patterns adapted from earth, sea, sky, and water.
