Introducing the Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse

Barcelona-based rug studio nanimarquina has launched this fall as the newest Coalesse design partner. This unique collaboration gives office designers new ways to add warmth, texture, acoustic absorption and residential comfort to the workplace — even in outdoor work settings.

The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse is a series of hand-tufted and hand-loomed rugs that celebrate the partners’ shared interest in the natural world, traditional craft and modern design.

About the Collection

The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse features six rug patterns, each available in five curated colorways and three sizes. These exclusive patterns are inspired by organic forms found in nature and by weaving’s natural geometry.

• Two of the patterns — Diagonal and Mesh — are dhurrie rugs woven from 100% recycled PET, for weather-resistant outdoor use. Yet, because they’re hand-loomed, they retain the look and feel of fine indoor rugs.
• The other patterns — Strokes, Shadows, Basket and Patch — are handcrafted from 100% wool, for indoor applications. Patch is a hand-loomed dhurrie rug, while the other three are hand-tufted.

Pattern families work together in various combinations to cover larger areas and provide natural boundaries in open spaces. The Coalesse color palette — rich, elemental tones drawn from land and sea — provides the foundation for the collection’s natural color scheme.

The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse is exclusively made in India, in association with Care & Fair, a nonprofit organization that supports local artisans and their families through education and access to healthcare.

Nani Marquina founded her eponymous rug studio in 1987.

Shared Values

nanimarquina is a family-owned company known for blending contemporary design with traditional rugmaking techniques. Its globally recognized founder, Nani Marquina, is the daughter of Spanish design icon Rafael Marquina. The company holds fast to the core values of quality materials, traditional handcraft, process innovation, global thinking, social responsibility and modern design.

When Coalesse and nanimarquina began exploring a partnership three years ago, the two companies discovered they hold many of these values in common, said John Hamilton, global design director for Coalesse.

Particularly impressive, Hamilton said, were “the practices they believe in — using the right materials, using the right supply chain, not taking advantage of people. And then completely believing that it is all about craft.”

The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse joins the Arzu Collection for Coalesse of handcrafted rugs, introduced in 2013. Together, these collections give designers greater opportunities to bring natural warmth, craft and comfort to social spaces, collaborative settings and spaces for personal focus.

Shadows — a hand-tufted wool rug inspired by irregular shadows cast by foliage.

Basket — a hand-tufted wool rug reminiscent of light passing through a woven basket. Five design variations explore dark and light color combinations.

Mesh — a hand-loomed rug made from 100% recycled PET rug in a flat-weave dhurrie design with varying textures. Long in development, nanimarquina’s new matte PET fiber brings the look of fine indoor rugs to the great outdoors.
