Inspiration is found in different places and through different methods for each of us. Regardless of the differences between our sources of inspiration, we’re all connected by the search for inspiration.
Inspiration is a means to create commonality between people and what they seek out in a personal moment. As we further explore the idea of creativity and work, we need to better understand how people use their inspiration to fuel creative work.
We wanted to explore inspiration and creativity on a more personal level, so we invited a diverse group of designers and design thinkers to join us for a conversation in New York City this past December. It was a special night of conversation and thinking together, which is one of my favorite types of collaboration. We discovered that even amid our different experiences and worldviews, the pursuit of inspiration and creativity connects us all.
We noticed a correlation between the inspiration individuals seek, and what they desire in their physical environment like storage space, modern accessories or outdoor office furniture. When individuals personalize their own spaces, it often connects back to the places that inspire them, the places or experiences that they connected with and have a positive memory of. They desire artifacts to remind them of the original experience they had with the inspirational object or moment.
During our event, I was struck by the diversity of the group. Though we represented different backgrounds and educations, disciplines and interests, we discovered shared inspirations. When we talked about our inspiration as a group, there was even greater cross pollination of the thinking. It was delightful to find that our inspirations became a binding element to unite the passion and souls of us all.
