Lievore Altherr Molina collaborated with the Coalesse Design Group to design seating for the new Montara650 Collection. In this question and answer blog post, designer Manel Molina shares his insights into the design process.
1. What was the inspiration behind Montara650 Seating?
The premises that guided the project were simplicity, ease of assembly, ease of manufacture, adaptability and transversalidad – most closely translated in English as universal and versatile – starting from a curved plywood board that could be upholstered and have different bases added according to its use.
Obviously, the chair had to be distinctive and somewhat iconic because it was the first everyday chair from Coalesse. The cut of the shell was what made it stand out from the rest. And from there, with upholstery its expression can be elevated.
The inspiration came from abstracting the shape of a seated human figure, with the torso (back) and the hips (seat) and the transition zone that unites them. This turned into a fairly neutral, balanced shape that was still iconic and recognizable and transmits its particular personality.
2. How would you describe the design process? What were some of the challenges that you faced?
The process was quite quick in principle. But finding a response to the various design parameters of a product with these characteristics meant a much slower and more meticulous process, until the final outcome met all the requirements of a highly specialized and demanding sector.
3. What makes Montara650 Seating a unique addition to the workplace?
The greatest contribution in our view is the simplicity that makes it adaptable to many settings, and the great capacity for customization thanks to different kinds of upholstery and different structures to assemble it on. In short, it is a very versatile product.
4. What are some of your suggested applications for Montara650 Seating?
Being an everyday product, it is there to be used any way that people like.
