In our Craft Your SW_1 Contest, we invited designers to create a custom SW_1 Lounge Chair and Ottoman using the fabric of their choice and Coalesse Color, a program that applies infinite base paint color options. We received more than 100 entries, and next week we’ll invite you to decide the winner by voting for your favorite on our Instagram channel.
For each submission, we asked the designer to share their personal story of inspiration through either a written story or images. The results were truly inspiring – and fun. Although these designs are not the finalists we’ll vote on next week, they were some of our favorites. We wanted to share them, and in turn, hopefully inspire you to create and craft something unique yourself.
Rebecca Hudson of Empire Office created a SW_1 Lounge design that reminded her of a favorite animal and memory. She shared her story with us in her contest entry:
“To be face to face with an exotic wild animal, small or large is an experience that any human will never forget. This photo captured a moment in time where my heart was truly happy. I have admired these beautiful birds from afar for years. I have seen countless pictures of people in places like Aruba, surrounded by them, and I always hoped that could be me. Having recently moved to Florida, I never thought that I could have that same experience right here where I live.
For my twenty-sixth birthday, my boyfriend surprised me by setting up this experience at the Palm Beach Zoo. I will never forget kneeling next to Catalina, looking her in the eye, while she pressed her beak to my face, as if to give me a kiss!
I admire the design of the SW_1 chair in the same way I admire Flamingos. It has elegant curves, encourages social behavior, and the color choices are stunning!”
Corrinne Cassidy of Partners in Architecture was inspired by a trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. At the museum, golden ginkgo tree leaves made it appear as if the landscape was covered in gold. In addition to her design which included the same golden hues of the leaves, she wrote a poem:
Which night they will fall is a mystery
Unpredictable since the beginning of time
It was our fortune to discover this landscape of gold
Set perfectly for our arrival
A fleeting moment in time
Celebrated
Ashley Ochiagha of HGA found inspiration in her personal style and how it’s evolved over time. She found “the perfect mode of measuring my evolution was examining my everyday essentials.” Through a picture and description of her favorite accessories, she demonstrated the thinking behind her custom SW_1 design.
As pictured above, these are a few of her favorite everyday essentials:
The SW_1 Chair design by Mollie Robinson of Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects was inspired by nature and the colors of fall leaves.
“Nature is such a large influential and important factor in design. The stunning performance portrayed by the leaves of fall trees were my inspiration for the scheme of my SW_1 Lounge Chair. I could not help but be inspired by the miracle of nature around me.
